Future Tense

Future Tense explores positions in video art, which draft alternative visions for the future to establish histories which reflect on the present. Combining video art, installation and technology, the exhibition connects speculative narratives as a means to explore contemporary politics, histories and national identity.

Featuring  Antionette J. Citizen, Hannah Brontë, Yael Bartana, Rachel Mason, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Tristan Jalleh.

Video Visions

Screening, 8 September, 7pm
 ACMI, Cinema 2 $15/$12

Video Visions is Channels’ flagship screening program exclusive to ACMI. Presented over one night, Video Visions is curated from over 470 submissions from artists across the world. Drawing on contemporary positions in video art, the 2017 program presents 17 artists with disparate observations, critiques and reflections on cultural identity, appropriation, gender and shared experiences.

Caroline Garcia: Flygirl

Performance, 7 September, 6pm

Flygirl is a solo dance installation that samples performances by the all-female troupe Fly Girls from the 1990s US television series In Living Color. Against the backdrop of a green screen, Garcia performs the routines of Fly Girls to explore the gaps between cultures, the experience of ‘otherness,’ and clichés of exotic femininity.

Atong Atem: Come Home

Exhibition, Wednesday 6 September, 5pm-8pm
BLINDSIDE, Gallery 2, Free 

 A new commission by Melbourne-based South Sudanese artist Atong Atem, continuing her ongoing interest and research into migrant narratives, postcolonial practices, and the exploration of self and identity.

Autofictions: Festival Closing Party

The SUBSTATION, $20/$18
Speculative visions of the future with performances by Rachel Mason, Hannah Brontë, Jesswar, Club D'erange,  and the D’erange Dance Guides, underscored with sub-sounds by Liquid Architecture, and moving image by Xanthe Dobbie as they take control of stage and screen.
