Similitude of a dream is a series of interactive animated vignettes based on the most universally common dreams.

I became interested in dreams as a form of sanctuary—as a channel between humans and other forces, a way in which to receive divine revelation, an activity that ‘cleanses’ and ‘declutters’ the mind or how the body processes everyday life. Recurring typical dreams mark a public domain, creating a common bond between us—sanctuaries for universal anxieties and lived experiences.

 
 

I used interactive animation loops to mimic the internal cinema of dreams, as well as parallel the recurrence of common dreams. I also wanted to mimic the surreal feel of dreams; utilising vivid otherworldly colours, loose gestural brushstrokes and the frenetic quality of frame-by-frame animation boils to create hazy, abstracted vignettes representative of the transient nature of dreams.

My artistic practice draws strongly from Fauvist and Expressionist art and their liberal use of colour and abstraction—movements that drew inspiration from individual and subjective experiences like dreams and emotions to create distortions of reality.

 
 

Tanya Wong is is a multi-media artist based in Naarm/Melbourne, working across diverse forms of media including illustration, game design, and video. She is a recent graduate of RMIT's Bachelor of Design (Games), with her capstone project Reject Island being a Dean's List Award recipient as well as being exhibited at ACMI + RMIT Audience Lab.
